Abstract

Absenteeism from lectures has become an issue of great concern for stakeholders in education. This has been brought to focus by the much-publicized poor performance of students in national examinations. Little has been done to gain reliable data on the extent, causes and effects with an aim to proffer solutions. This study sought to make efforts towards closing this gap locally by focusing on students of the Department of Architecture Anambra State University Uli.  It examined literature on similar studies on causes and effects of absenteeism from lectures. A forensic study of attendance records kept by academic staff in the Department of Architecture was employed to establish the existence of absenteeism amongst students, while questionnaires were distributed to all students in the department to gather data on occurrence, causes, effects and indicators for possible solutions. It was established that absenteeism occurred amongst students and that it had negative impact on their studies. It was concluded that the findings had implications for education administration.
